About The Barometer
The Barometer is an independent, data-first leaderboard for protein bars — inspired by the "one big comparison table" approach that sites like Artificial Analysis brought to AI models. One transparent score, every bar on the same axes, sortable by whatever you care about.
Does something like this already exist?
Sort of — but not quite like this. There are three kinds of existing resources, and each leaves a gap:
- Editorial "best of" lists (Healthline, Forbes Health, Today, Chowhound) — curated picks and taste tests. Useful, but a handful of bars, refreshed a couple times a year, and no way to re-rank by your own priorities.
- Lab tests — Labdoor chemically analyzed ~20 top sellers for protein accuracy and contaminants. Rigorous, but a small fixed set and not a live, sortable database.
- Macro rankings— CompareMacros and generic nutrition databases (Open Food Facts, MyFitnessPal, Cronometer) let you look up numbers, but they don't combine macros andingredient quality into a single opinionated score, and they aren't protein-bar specific.
The Barometer's niche is the overlap none of them fully cover: a protein-bar-specific, transparent, sortable leaderboard that scores ingredients (seed oils, sugar alcohols, artificial sweeteners) alongside the macros, updates automatically, and lets anyone submit a bar.
Where the data comes from
The launch set of the most popular bars was compiled from product labels, official brand sites, and major nutrition databases. From there the dataset grows automatically: a scheduled job queries Open Food Facts — a free, open, crowd-sourced food database — for new protein bars each day, normalizes the nutrition panel, and adds anything it hasn't seen. Community submissions feed the same pipeline.
How scoring works
Every bar gets a 0–100 health score from a published, weighted formula. Read the exact weights and thresholds on the methodology page — and re-sort the leaderboard by any single metric if you disagree with the weighting.
Buy links & images
Each bar links out to a retailer search so you can find it in stock and compare prices. Product images use generated placeholder cards until a licensed or brand-provided image is added — the data model already has an image slot per bar. Buy links may become affiliate links in the future; that will never change a bar's score.

The Barometer is for general information, not medical or dietary advice. Nutrition needs are individual — talk to a professional for yours. We work to keep figures accurate, but formulations and prices change; always confirm the label on the package you actually buy.
